What Is Hepatitis B?
Hepatitis B is an infection that affects the liver, and it is caused by Hepatitis B virus. There are five types of hepatitis, namely, hepatitis A, B,C,D and E. Hepatitis B is potentially life threatening.
Hep B can develop into chronic liver disease and put people at high risk of death from cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver and liver cancer.
Hepatitis B is a silent epidemic because most people do not have symptoms when they are newly infected or chronically infected.
Thus, they can unknowingly and silently spread the virus.
People who are chronically infected but do not have any symptoms, still silently could have the liver being damaged, and this can lead to liver cirrhosis or liver failure or cancer.
Symptoms Of Hepatitis B
Signs and symptoms of hepatitis B range from mild to severe. They usually appear about one to four months after you have been infected, although you could see them as early as two weeks post-infection. Some people, usually young children, may not have any symptoms.
Hepatitis B virus can cause an acute illness with symptoms that last several weeks. This includes:
- Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
- Dark urine
- Extreme fatigue
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Fever
- Joint pain
People with chronic (long-term) hepatitis B infection later develop complications like liver failure, cirrhosis (scarring) and liver failure.
MODE OF TRANSMISSION
- Mother to child. Pregnant women infected with HBV can pass the virus to their babies during childbirth. However, the newborn can be vaccinated to avoid getting infected in almost all cases. Talk to your doctor about being tested for hepatitis B if you are pregnant or want to become pregnant.
- Sexual relations with a partner who has hepatitis B.
- Sharing of needles (tattooing and piercing) and syringes (the use of syringe used during drug the use of recreational drugs)
- Sharing of items such as toothbrushes and razors with persons who has hepatitis B
- Through body fluid such as vaginal secretions and seminal fluid.

How do I Know If I Have Hepatitis B Infection?
Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg) blood test is used to screen for Hepatitis B infection.
If a person is positive, the health provider will ask for further confirmatory test such as Hepatitis B profile test and Hepatitis B viral Load test.
A Liver Function Test may be required to assess the state of the Liver since Hepatitis B affects the liver.
Treatment
There is no specific treatment for hepatitis B.
The best way to prevent Hepatitis B infection is through vaccination.

The vaccine protect you for at least 20 years and it is probably lifelong.
Hepatitis B Vaccines are safe for all age groups.
Only people infected cannot be vaccinated.
