It’s not clear what causes prostate cancer and prostate enlargement. A man’s prostate naturally grows as he gets older. The exact reason for this growth is unknown. The prostate goes through two main growth periods as a man ages. The first occurs early in puberty when the prostate doubles in size. The second phase of growth begins around age 25 and continues during most of a man’s life. This is where prostate enlargement often
occurs with the second growth phase.
Prostate cancer begins when cells in the prostate develop changes in their DNA. All cancer starts when cells start to multiply out of control. Cancer is caused by changes to DNA, the genetic material that controls cell growth. You can inherit DNA changes from your parents. The changes tell the cells to grow and divide more rapidly than normal cells do. The accumulating abnormal cells form a tumor that can grow to invade nearby tissue. In
time, some abnormal cells can break away and spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body.
Enlarged Prostate (BPH) and prostate cancer have similar symptoms, so it’s sometimes hard to tell the two conditions apart. In Prostate enlargement, as the prostate enlarges, it squeezes the urethra (the tube that lets urine leave your bladder and your body) and put pressure on it. This pressure prevents urine from getting down your urethra and out of
your body.
Prostate cancer often has No Symptoms in the early stages. The growing tumor does not push against anything to cause pain, so for many years, the disease may be silent. That’s why screening for prostate cancer is such an important topic for all men and their families.
Symptoms of both Prostate Enlargement (BPH) and Prostate cancer include:
